I have used this to produce excellent studio shots of static subjects and even used the pictures taken for publication in a couple of books that have been published. Adding the STE-2 to help with focussing helps a bit but not much. Focussing on low contrast is more miss than hit as is low-light focussing. This is not all bad though - it does excellent landscape and building photos. The same lens on a 30D produces really crisp eyes. I have never managed to get really crisp eyes from a portrait with this and this is due to the vagueness of the focussing. Focussing is generally pretty reasonable though not excellent. The kit lens is much maligned but used within its capabilities is excellent.Īs far as the body is concerned, it works well enough. Canon batteries seem to work well but the knock-offs I've had have generally been a waste of money as they die after two or three charges. The batteries are decent and I do advise the battery grip. I've exhibited 16 x 24 prints in state-level competitions taken with this camera. It's a bit outclassed now in terms of megapixels but 8 megapixels will still produce an excellent 16 x 24 inch print or at a push even a 20 x 30 inch print. I've been using mine almost continually ever since. I bought this camera (albeit in black) in 2005. For the price this is perfect for what I do. Looking at replacements I decided to stick with the Rebel XT. I did let someone borrow my camera and he put the memory card in upside down and bent the pins. I do have two better lenses than the 18-55 mm lens that is bundled from Cannon. You have to get a separate reader if you want to download to your computer directly. The only thing that I dislike about this camera is the memory card is so big and uses pins to plug into the camera.

Using the full manual controls and knowing what you are doing you can take professional photos with this little c amera. He even has shown me a couple of tricks to improve the quality of the pictures I have taken. My friend who is a professional photographer uses a Nikon and comparing the picture quality they are very similar.

This camera is lightweight and I have taken it on backpacking trips and even learned how to take great firework pictures with it. It only took me a couple of hours to figure out all the controls and options that were different than the film camera and I have been happy with the picture quality and flexibility of deleting pictures that didn't come out exactly the way I wanted.
I bought this camera years ago when I finally moved away from the film version I owned in the 90s. but for a basic DSLR that is easy to learn to use, this is definitely it.

there is no video feature, look at the aforementioned Nikon with it's commercial/advertisement-grade 1080p capabilities. If you need digital video - this is not it. On the other hand, I spent about $600 on the Nikon for my son's birthday, and less than $200 on my Canon. I do wish the exposure shutter length could be set longer than 30 seconds for my night-sky photography, my son's Nikon 3100D will go quite a bit longer - 5 minutes I think, but I realize that is a miniscule concern for most - and thus the one-point off for features. I've taken some awesome pictures of the Capitol here by sim ply standing on the sidewalk.
I think I may not have been as excited if I had bought one with the factory freebie lens, but having the slightly-stronger strength of the SIGMA and the lightning-fast focus speed is great for portraits as well as some building/architecture shots.
It's a perfect size for a DSLR, pictures are fantastic (especially for it's age & resolution) and my particular one came with a fantastic SIGMA lens.

I originally picked up the XT for two reasons, one - I wanted an upgrade from the point & shoot junk, and two - this particular camera had a lot of astronomy add-ons/compatibility and I've been wanting to hook a camera up to a telescope.Ī month or so in now, I find myself taking the thing everywhere.
